If you think baseball is slow, you haven’t experienced the magic of the Savannah Bananas in Savannah. From choreographed celebrations and players on stilts to epic walk-up dances and crowd sing-alongs, every Savannah Bananas game feels more like a festival than a traditional baseball matchup. Cumberland Island Adventure

We extended our Savannah trip and drove a couple of hours to St. Mary’s, Georgia to catch the ferry to Cumberland Island.

Cumberland Island – The Story

Exploring the Untamed Beauty of Cumberland Island, Georgia 🏝️

Stepping onto Cumberland Island feels like traveling back in time. Accessible only by ferry, this breathtaking barrier island is a place where history, wildlife, and nature exist in perfect harmony.

One of the island’s most famous landmarks is the historic First African Baptist Church, built in 1893 by formerly enslaved residents of the island. The small white church gained worldwide attention when John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette chose it as the location for their private wedding in 1996.

History lovers will be amazed by the island’s Carnegie-era mansions. The haunting ruins of Dungeness, once a 35,000-square-foot winter estate built by the Carnegie family, still stand as one of the most photographed spots on the island. Nearby, Plum Orchard Mansion offers a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of America’s Gilded Age elite.

Of course, no visit to Cumberland Island would be complete without spotting its iconic wild horses. More than 150 horses roam freely across beaches, maritime forests, and historic grounds, creating scenes that look straight out of a movie. These horses have lived on the island for generations and are one of the most recognizable symbols of Cumberland.

Another fascinating part of Cumberland’s story is naturalist and conservation legend Carol Ruckdeschel, often called the “Jane Goodall of sea turtles.” She has spent more than five decades living on and studying the island, dedicating her life to protecting Cumberland’s fragile ecosystem and inspiring generations of conservationists.

✨ Fun Facts:
• Cumberland Island boasts 17 miles of undeveloped beaches.
• Only a limited number of visitors are allowed each day, helping preserve its wild character.
• The island is home to maritime forests, marshes, sea turtles, armadillos, and abundant birdlife.
• It is Georgia’s largest and southernmost barrier island.

From roaming horses and Carnegie mansions to pristine beaches and fascinating history, Cumberland Island is one of America’s hidden treasures and a destination that truly feels untouched by time.
